Assessment of the state of water resources in the Himalayan states of India

11 states in India have all or part of their territory in the Himalayan mountains. These are typically viewed as areas with high rainfall, and abundant water resources. However, this view does not take note of local water stress, environmental degradation and emerging problems like population stress and climate change.

On behalf of the Planning Commission of India, PSI is preparing a situation analysis report on water resources in the Himalayan States. This study aims to assess the status of surface water availability and demand. The results of this study will enable the informed planning of natural resource management in the Himalayan states, and guide the formulation of plans and policy that will enable the sustainable development of water resources in the area.
